One of the hardest things to overcome when dealing with low self-esteem is negative thinking. When we allow negative thoughts and beliefs to creep into our minds, it quickly becomes truth to us, even if it is completely false. This belief could have come from a parent, an ex, or even yourself, but these lies need to stop in order to build or rebuild your self-esteem.
- I’m not good enough. What does “good enough” even mean? This is the most common lie we believe within ourselves. Good enough stems from comparing ourselves, or being compared, to others. Comparison never leads to anything productive or beneficial. People will always be better, stronger, better looking, etc. than you if that’s what you are focusing on. Rather, focus on who YOU are and what makes you great. Set your own standards of what good is and then go out and achieve it!
Replace with: I am the only me and that is good!
- I’m a failure. Failing is a part of life, and you have two options on how to look at failure. You can either decide to wallow in your failures and feel like you are never going to succeed, or you can learn from your failure, figure out to do it better, get up, try again and succeed!
Replace with: I did not achieve what I wanted, so I will learn and try again or venture into something new.
- No one cares about me. When you don’t love yourself it’s hard to believe that anyone else does. If you really take the time to stop and focus in on the people in your life that have been there for you, chances are, you will find that many people care about you and your well being. Stop focusing on the people who don’t care…they are not worth your time and energy! Focus on the people that have enriched your life, and more importantly, start caring about yourself.
Replace with: I love myself and I am loved.
- I can’t do it. When suffering from a low self-esteem, you tend to believe that everything is out of reach, but those common sayings such as: “You can do anything you set your mind to;” or “Mind over matter” are true! Start speaking positively, encouragement and success into your life and then TRY and it will happen. And if you fail, then see #2!
Replace with: I CAN do it.
